Well, Hurricane Ike blew through almost two weeks ago and it feels like things are just starting to get back to normal. Here is a quick recap of that week ~
Monday, September 8th
Started to hear a few things on the news about some storm named Ike that may or may not hit the Texas coast. Not to worried.
Tuesday, September 9th
Dropped parents off at the airport for a 10 day trip to Alaska, assured them everything would be okay and not to worry about the maybe impending hurricane.
Wednesday, September 10th
Getting a little concerned about this Ike thing.
Thursday, September11th
Capital One announces it will be closing its offices on Friday and Saturday. Now, I am scared! We never close! I hit up HEB around 10 am - it is packed, I have to buy $8 bacon, some type of gourmet wheat bread, and the water aisle is wiped out! I end up spending about $100 on food - some of it is totally odd, but hey who sends a 7 month pregnant lady to the store and thinks they are going to get out of there with realistic hurricane food? I loaded up on what I felt was a necessity - Doritos, Frito's, Cinnamon Rolls, Steak, Taco stuff, Guacamole, Strawberries, Peaches, Watermelon, Frozen Pizza and Candy. Head home around 1pm - traffic was crazy! I stopped by my parents to look for any potential projectile items in the back yard, I moved what I could and then called Kenny to move the rest.
I didn't make it home until 4pm. Seth and I went to eat at Rancho Grande and then came home and watched the news coverage of Galveston. Put a pot roast, potato's, carrots, and mushrooms into the crock post to eat on Friday night.
Friday, September 12th
Seth and I discuss whether or not we have a battery powered radio - we come to agreeance that our alarm clocks run off of batteries and they have radios, so we should be good to go. Visit Target in search of flashlight - man are we stupid - they were cleared out! Stop by Vernon's and grab some lunch - delicious. All the windows were boarded up so it was really dark in there and it felt really weird. After that we stopped by my Grandparents to chit chat, my Uncle Randy was there so we visited with them for a while. Headed home to await the impending storm. We ate pot roast for dinner - delicious! After that we took our cars over to Dan and Robbie's 8 car carriage house. I was concerned about a dead tree in the lot across the street from us. Go to bed.
Saturday, September 13th
I wake up around 4:00 am I could hear the wind outside of our window. I kept hearing all the trees being swished around. Laid there for a little while and freaked myself out. Finally fell back asleep, woke up again around 7 am ~ the power is out. Went into the living room and watched the wind and rain for a bit. Seth woke up and drove over to Dan and Robbie's to get his other truck. Meanwhile I prepared breakfast tacos - hashbrowns, bacon, tortillas, salsa, and cheese. Delicious! Seth got back and filled me in on what he saw in the neighborhood - downed trees and a few smashed cars and houses. Around 10 am we go for a little drive down to the boat launch - it was crazy, the lake looked like the ocean the waves were so big! I have a video I will post soon. We came back home and Ma called and said there was tree blocking them in. We decide we will head to River Plantation around 1 pm to help cut the tree up (Seth was very excited) and to check on my parents house.
Once we get to RP we are amazed - it looks like a tornado just went straight up and down every road. Almost every other house has a tree on it. Many roads were blocked so we had to take the super back way. When we pulled onto my families culdesac there was a guy with a tractor pushing the huge tree out of the way. Very Nice! My Gma was very happy to see us. They were okay and we went and checked on my parents house. They had 2 trees fall in the yard, once flew in from the neighbors yard, kind of scary! We spent the rest of the day checking on friends and family and then we came home to enjoy our first night without power.
Sunday, September 14th
Having no electricity sucks! Seth calls his Mom and asked her to try and get us a generator, thankfully she found one. So Seth, me, Wendy, Doug, and Lily head up to Grosbeck to meet Paula and Mark to get the generator and a window unit. We are amazed at how far up I45 people are with out power. We had a lovely breakfast at Dairy Queen - Paula got to love on Lily lots and she even shared her french fries. She got lots of Lily love and we were sad to have to say good bye to her and Mark. I have to mention that in Grosbeck I look good - someone even honked at me! We then headed over to Wal-Mart in Mexia to stock up on other hurricane survival essentials - powdered donuts, bean dip, more Frito's, and a real radio. FYI - clock radios don't work with batteries, only the clock works! Spend the rest of the day enjoying the generator and window unit. ! :) Thank you Paula and Mark!!!
Also - my husband is a genius he figured out how to plug the generator into the house so we could use the oven and lights. He ended up having to do this for numerous friends and some family. I am amazed at his survival knowledge!
Monday, September 15th
Still no power. Pulled up to my parents house to see Kenny syphoning gas out of their work van - small audience observing him. Have we really come to this?
Enjoyed Hurricane party at my gparents with lots of family.
Tuesday, September 16th
Still no power. This really sucks.
Wednesday, September 17th
Wendy and Doug get power, I think it has something to do with living in The Woodlands, hehe.
Kenny gets power back too. We hear a rumor that we have power. Seth and I drive to Huntsville to eat at El Chico - that was the best stale food I have ever eaten! We get home around 10 pm - WE HAVE POWER!!!! Woo Hoo!!!
Thursday, September 18th
I love sleeping with real air conditioning! It Rocks!
Lot's of other stuff happened but it seems like the week was like groundhogs day. I'll post pictures soon!

Hilarious!! Seriously, Daddy and I were so proud of how y'all took care of each other and made sure everyone had what they needed to survive. We said several times while on vacation that we had complete faith in all of our kids that y'all knew how to handle crisis situations. You did not let us down!!
ReplyDeleteglad y'all made it though w/o any probs! can't wait to see your pics!
